Stop the Timer FAQ
Common questions about playing, scoring, multiplayer, and privacy.
Getting Started
What is Stop the Timer?expand_more
Stop the Timer is a free online game where you start a hidden timer and try to stop it as close to a target time as possible. It tests your ability to estimate short durations — not your reaction speed.
How do I play?expand_more
Choose a target time (3, 5, 10 seconds, or a random/custom duration), press START, wait without watching the clock, and press STOP when you think the target has passed. Your result shows how close you were.
Do I need to sign up?expand_more
No. All games are free to play without an account, download, or payment. Your scores are stored locally on your device.
Can I play on my phone?expand_more
Yes. Every game works with touch, mouse, or keyboard. The interface is fully responsive.
Targets & Game Modes
What is the difference between the game modes?expand_more
Quick challenges (3s, 5s, 10s, Random, Custom) are single-round tests. Perception games involve watching or comparing durations. Strategy modes like Time Bank and Streak add resource or survival mechanics. Multiplayer modes let you compete with friends.
How does Random work?expand_more
Each round generates a random target between 2.00 and 15.00 seconds. The target stays fixed during the round and regenerates when you start a new round or click Regenerate.
How does Custom work?expand_more
You can set any target between 0.50 and 60.00 seconds using a slider or manual input. The slider has 0.05-second steps; manual input allows 0.01-second precision.
Why is the timer hidden?expand_more
Hidden timers prevent you from watching the clock and adjusting in real time. This forces you to rely on your internal sense of time, which is what the game measures.
Scoring & Accuracy
How is accuracy calculated?expand_more
Accuracy = (1 − |actual time − target time| / target time) × 100%. A smaller absolute error means higher accuracy. The game also shows whether you stopped early or late.
What do the grades mean?expand_more
Grades are based on your error ratio: S (≤10ms), A+ (≤0.5%), A (≤1%), B (≤2.5%), C (≤5%), D (>5%). These are casual feedback labels, not professional assessments.
Is this a reaction-time test?expand_more
No. Reaction time tests measure how quickly you respond to a sudden signal. Stop the Timer measures duration estimation — you produce a time interval from memory without any external cue.
Can my score be used for medical or educational purposes?expand_more
No. Results are for casual entertainment and self-observation only. They vary by device, browser, input method, and individual conditions. This is not a medical, psychological, or cognitive assessment.
Multiplayer
How does Pass & Play work?expand_more
Two to eight players take turns on the same device. Each player completes their round, and results are hidden until everyone has played. The ranking is revealed at the end.
How does Challenge a Friend work?expand_more
Complete a round, generate a challenge link, and send it to a friend. They open the link and play the same target. Both results are compared when they finish.
Does Simultaneous Play need a physical keyboard?expand_more
Yes. Each player presses a different key (e.g., A, S, D, F) on the same keyboard. This mode is designed for in-person play with a physical keyboard.
Device & Browser Differences
Will I get the same result on different devices?expand_more
Not exactly. Input latency, screen refresh rate, and browser processing can affect close results. The game shows a disclaimer about device differences. For casual comparison, use the same device.
Why does the game invalidate my round when I switch tabs?expand_more
If the page loses focus during a running round, the round is invalidated. This prevents unfair advantages from pausing or external timing aids.
Privacy & Local Data
What data does the game store?expand_more
Your best scores, recent attempts, theme preference, and sound preference are stored in your browser's localStorage. No data is sent to a server unless you create a challenge link.
How do I reset my data?expand_more
Use the "Reset Local Data" button in the footer. This clears all local scores, preferences, and game history from your browser.
Does the game use cookies?expand_more
The game uses localStorage (not cookies) for essential functionality. No tracking or analytics cookies are used in the current version.
Research & Limitations
Can playing this game improve my sense of time?expand_more
Research suggests people can improve on specific timing tasks with practice, but improvement is usually task-specific. Getting better at one interval does not automatically improve all forms of timing. The game is best used as a repeatable practice tool, not as proof of broad cognitive improvement.
Does the game measure anything scientifically?expand_more
The game measures your performance on a casual duration-production task under specific conditions. It can show patterns like early/late bias and consistency, but it is not a scientific instrument and should not be used for diagnosis or assessment.
